About Mariam

Mariam B Khan is a registered Doctor in Unani Medicine, based in Durban, South Africa. She has 12 years of experience in private practice with a focus on girls' and women's health. She has also completed a Master's degree in Gender and Religion with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Mariam is a regular sexual and reproductive health consultant on national radio and has previously hosted her own shows on radio as well as presented a health segment on television.

With a holistic approach to medicine and her experience as an academic in Gender and Religion, Mariam understands the impact religion and culture has on our health-seeking behaviour and on our lives in general. She believes sexual confidence often comes from identifying and unlearning the damaging messages we may have been exposed to in the past and relearning new ways of being that are still aligned with our religious and/or cultural beliefs. In this regard, Mariam is passionate about creating body-positive, sex-positive, and sexual justice-supportive spaces that promote shame-free, guilt-free, pain-free, and pleasurable sex.
